During the course of our Entrepreneur Story blog series, we have heard several unique and interesting life stories of Meesho entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds and age groups. We are always in awe of the entrepreneurial spirits and resourcefulness of our entrepreneurs. And we see this yet again in the story of entrepreneur Mamatha, a homemaker and mother to two, who set out on an entrepreneurial journey with Meesho in 2018. And Mamatha’s resilience has been strengthened by the unwavering support of her husband Srinivas. Both halves of the couple are both Meesho entrepreneurs and run a successful business called RV Collections on the platform.

In January 2018, Mamatha decided that she wanted to give online reselling a try, and approached her husband with the idea. Impressed with its prospects Srinivas agreed to get on board, and even join in on the venture. Together they launched RV Collections. “We have been business partners on this venture together since January 2018,” reveals Srinivas, adding how before Meesho entered their lives, they used to buy products from dealers and manufacturers directly.

When hustle meets convenience

The duo was introduced to Meesho by a fellow online entrepreneur, whose business page on Facebook featured photos of many Meesho products. Impressed, they reached out to the entrepreneur to learn more about Meesho, and eventually, she referred them to the app as well. “Since then we have moved 90 per cent of our business to Meesho and it has truly thrived on the platform,” says Srinivas, while Mamatha relates how Meesho’s replacement and refunding facilities, and country-wide delivery options have been a huge boon for them. “There have been many occasions where we made over 100,000 sales in a week. We have also truly benefited from Meesho’s bonus programme quite a few times,” says Mamatha.

These achievements are especially impressive considering Mamatha and Srinivas were settled in Malaysia until six months ago. “Working on Meesho internationally was only possible because both my wife and I had the willingness to do whatever it took to succeed,” says Srinivas, whose career as a software engineer restricted the amount of time he could invest in reselling.

However, they reached out to the contacts they had back in India, including friends and family members, who eventually became their customers. “We also used every social media platform we could to grow their business from X to 10X. We have a YouTube channel with over 30K subscribers where we showcase our products and market them to potential customers,” says Mamatha, adding how incorporating only minimal margins for themselves have also contributed to their success.

Putting customers first

“With Meesho getting more and more popular, competition has been pretty stiff,” says Srinivas, but Mamatha and Srinivas, despite their busy schedules, make it a point to ensure that their customers know they are their no. 1 priority. This involves promptly replying to customers’ queries, engaging with them on WhatsApp groups, and regularly sharing details of new products.

During the lockdown period, making revenue through Meesho has been a great benefit, says Mamatha. And currently, their aim is to keep growing their business and making new records of sales.

“Both my wife and I have limited time, but in the time that we do have, we find new ways to increase our customer base while also ensuring that our old customers’ needs are met. We have customers who have been buying our products for the last 3–4 years, even when they have options to buy from our competitors at cheaper rates. This is because they know that at RV Collections, they are always a priority. We go as far as to give refunds to people who were unable to return their products from their remote locations. They appreciate that sense of responsibility and honesty,” she says.

Srinivas attributes two entrepreneurial masterstrokes for his success and wishes to share the same with all budding online entrepreneurs: “Understand the entrepreneur margin sweet spot. It should not be too low that the time and effort you spent on reselling isn’t valued but it should not be too high that customers are turned off by them. Secondly, use every single platform available to promote your brand and your products optimally.
