About
Metadata Learning & Unlearning
This series raises questions and makes proposals for what metadata can do to advance a broader dialogue about diverse worldviews within open education and openGLAM realms. It is a project of Curationist.org, a free, online resource to reimagine arts & culture narratives.
Note from the editor

The GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) sector is experiencing an upswell of interest in addressing the imperial, colonial, racist, sexist, homophobic, and ableist roots of our cultural heritage institutions and collections. Many institutions have begun reparative projects to update the presentation of these collections online and in their physical spaces. Interrogating and updating metadata, or data about collection items, is a part of this process. The metadata case studies in this series raise questions and make proposals for what metadata can do to intervene in oppressive systems of thought so as to advance a broader dialogue about diverse worldviews. This series of case studies, while far from comprehensive, seek to highlight particular issues in metadata that can be addressed or redressed by these additions, corrections, and re-contextualizations. There is vast pedagogical potential for these metadata case studies, hence our grounding in critical, dialogic open education resources (OER).
