Everything you need to know about Self-Sovereign Identity and Decentralized Identifiers

This is the first post on an educational series about Self-Sovereign Identity and Decentralized Identifiers.

Dear Metadians,

We know data protection is important and with the recent talk about SSI, DID, VP, and other concepts we decided to make your life easier and explain, as simple as possible, each of these concepts and how they connect to form and Identity Hub.

In the image below you can see the big picture: basically, SSI stands for Self-Sovereign Identity and it gets divided in Identifier and Identity (data). Each of them are formed by different elements like Decentralized Identifiers (DID), Personal Information, Verifiable Claims and Verifiable Presentations (VP), which are all related to your information and its authentication. The place where all this information is stored is called ID Hub.

In the following weeks we’ll be sharing links to posts with detailed information about each of these elements. Here you can find more information about Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) including its principles. SSI is the first post because it explains the basic concept that each person should fully own and control its data. An important notion in a world where our identity is constantly being controlled by third parties and put at risk of being stolen.

We want you to note that there is still work to do in order to achieve a world ruled by SSI but members of the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF) are working to develop and agree on these concepts and then bring them to live. Metadium recently announced it joined the DIF and has been working to develop DID specs.
