When you think of philosophers, there are a few names that come to mind. Socrates, Nietzche and Aristotle.

All three have had a big impact on western civilisation, but it could be argued that Aristotle had the most impact.

Taught by Plato, he founded the Lyceum, a school of philosophy. His writing covered a range of topics such as biology, physics, poetry and ethics. This explains his vast influence over western thought to this day.

Although we don’t know much about Aristotle’s life, we do know that he tutored a young Alexander the Great at the request of his father, Philip II of Macedon.

To have tutored one of the most revered leaders in ancient history, Aristotle must have been held with reverence by his peers. Similar to Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle’s writing might be over two thousand years old, but it’s packed with wisdom.

The fact that his curiosity was not restricted to one subject makes him such an intriguing figure, especially in today’s age of specialisation. We can learn a lot from Aristotle’ inquisitiveness and his desire to understand the world around him.
