A little while ago we discussed protecting your heart when things get overwhelming. Not to block things out in an avoidance sort of way, but to titrate the amount of awful that you can absorb so that you can protect yourself and fill your own cup, to still have something to give others.

This time we can talk about protecting our energy. And not just our physical energy — what we need to go and do things during the day — but our emotional energy too. Emotions can drain us, if we’re not careful. We need to learn some different ways we can protect our energy. So without further ado, here’s some things that can help:

First of all, being distracted can be a huge energy drain. If you’re pulled into a million different things at once — like having a bunch of tabs open on your computer. Don’t let yourself be pulled all over the place — try to focus on one thing, one moment at a time. We aren’t multitaskers. It might feel like we can multitask and do a bunch of things at once, but our brain actually can’t do that. It has to stop doing the one thing, and then take a moment to reset before focusing on…
