Our new logo! Check out our facebook page 😃

Last year on June 3rd, we started this medium blog with the hope to provide MIT Africans a new and different way to communicate. We started this blog with the hope to attract a broader audience. We started this blog with the hope to iterate and innovate on the way MIT African students and MIT friends of Africa can share their experiences at MIT. And we’re very happy with the way things have gone so far!

Quick Stats, Quick Maths

Over the last 90 days before September 2nd, we had:

  • 3400+ minutes read
  • 1700+ views
  • 15 visitors per day on average

For context, that’s about 2.3 days of non-stop reading! 😱

The Timeline, Up to Now

The first blog that was shared through this medium was Understanding Africa: A Syllabus posted by Selam G.. To make this blog happen, Selam G. surveyed many MIT africans to gather as much general information about Africa as possible to help readers see Africa through the eyes of Africans.

Timeline from June 28 to now

From then on, we went further publishing 12 other blogs, altogether producing over 4000 views! These posts included topics like music, machine learning, blockchain technology, MIT general tips, and more. That’s very exciting, but it wouldn’t be possible without our amazing authors (ordered by class year and alphabetically by first name):

So, we would like to take this moment to acknowledge these amazing stars and give them a HUGE thanks!

Looking Forward, Into The Future

With that said, we would like to keep this running and do even more! So, we encourage other MIT Africans to write blogs for this medium publication. We would like to reiterate a few things:

  • In this space, you can write about pretty much anything unless it’s just common-sense bad or inappropriate— check the guidelines or reach out if unsure!
  • The only requirement is that you consider yourself an “MIT African”. An “MIT African” is any person who is interested in or somehow related to Africa and is somehow related to MIT—and this is vague on purpose. We really welcome anyone who personally feels like they fit this criteria. 😃
  • The information on how to submit a blog post to this publication can be found on our Inauguration post. If need be, reach out to the exec team at africans_exec@mit.edu for questions.

With all that said, we thank all of our readers, and hope you enjoy reading from our blog! Happy start of the semester!
