弄丟比特幣的故事並不鮮見，尤其是在它最初誕生的那段日子裏，當比特幣還沒有那麼值錢的時候，私鑰很容易就被遺忘在某個舊硬盤上，U盤上，甚至一張小紙片上。因為早期持幣人對比特幣不以為意，把私鑰寫在紙上，一但寫上私鑰的紙遺失了，所擁有的比特幣如同石沉大海。

比特幣的總量是2100 萬顆，目前遺失的比特幣保守預估有380萬顆。
