With the changing or refocus of Modern Music Analysis, it’s time to home in on the expectations we have for prospective and current writers. These updated submission guidelines are meant to invigorate MMA and put an emphasis on quality content. If you’re interested in contemporary music, have a love for the nuances of production, content, subject matter and style, then Modern Music Analysis is the place for you! We place an emphasis on providing quality insight of our favorite music, usually through the form of album reviews; however, there are many more avenues to explore the analysis of music. To submit to MMA, just follow these steps:

New Writers

  • A Medium account is required (subscription is not)
  • Send an email to modernmusicanalysis@gmail.com with your name, Medium username, and either a sample or the draft you would like published
  • You will be notified if you have been accepted as a writer, and then will be free to submit to Modern Music Analysis. To submit, follow the guidelines mentioned below, press the three dots in the top right corner, select “Add to publication”, select Modern Music Analysis, and click submit
  • All submissions will be published within 48 hours and shared to the MMA social media pages. Feel free to follow our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok

Current Writers

  • Once approved as a writer for MMA, join the publication discord, link will be provided upon approval.
  • Writers for MMA must submit at least one (1) piece/article per month. Inactive writers will be removed as writers for Modern Music Analysis.
  • Album reviews, in order to fulfill SEO parameters, must be formatted as the following: “(album title) by (artist) | Album Review”. Album reviews submitted that do no follow this formatting will not be published until formatted accordingly. It is not a requirement, but the album cover art should be the designated photo of the review, as is permitted under Fair Use guidelines. The title of the album should be the caption of the photo.
  • Articles in Modern Music Analysis are opinion-based, but should be backed by factual information done through thorough research of the work you are reviewing (several listens, familiarity with lyrics, confirmation of concepts, knowing influences, producers, etc.).
  • Lastly, be confident in your opinion and writing. Love what you do and strive to find more and more music to review. Don’t be afraid to support and collaborate with other writers and publications! Music is subjective, everyone will always have a different opinion, so don’t be upset if someone doesn’t agree with you. Extend professional courtesy to your peers, respect is expected of all writers.

Unfortunately, contributions made to Modern Music Analysis are unpaid at this time unless enrolled in the Medium Partner Program. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this submission guidelines, feel free to contact me through private note or email modernmusicanalysis@gmail.com.
