Do you remember all that was written in September? We do! And what a month it was!

Between stories of activism in the face of oppression, fighting against other people’s dreams for us and changing how we view our mental health, the writers at Modern Women perfectly captured this month’s theme, “Migration.”

It was a joy to read every story that came in and learn more about some of our recurring writers whose lived experiences continue to elevate and inspire our community.

While we cannot showcase every writer, we appreciate every submission and story shared.

In honor of that, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate some of the stories that captivated our hearts and minds. Without further ado, here are a few of our favorites from the month of September, hand-picked by your friendly editors at Modern Women.

Brenda Covarrubias’ Top Pick for September is… “Are We Finally Ready to Talk About Age Gap Relationships?” by Kat Anderson.

It’s a romance as old as time: An older gentleman, in need of companionship, meets a young woman full of life. But is the stereotype all it’s cracked up to be? In her article, Kat discusses the highly controversial yet deeply concerning pattern of behavior among older men in positions of power dating minors and women barely of age to consent — and the ways in which it is excused.

Nicole Dake’s Top Pick for September is… “Women Trapped in Not-So-Sacred Marriages” by Andrea Hewitt.

This talks about the issue of violence against women in cases of marital rape. Andrea discusses this issue with compassion, and provides references to work that the United Nations is doing to encourage more countries to make laws to prevent these horrible crimes against women.

Mariana Carvalho’s Top Pick for September is… “What I Learned When I Stopped Shaving” by Anna Elizabeth Brown.

In this story, Anna talks about the connection between the decisios we make as women to follow guidelines prescribed by a patriarchy society, and how the decisions impact us, every day, throughout our whole life. I thought it was interesting how she provides context, while making the reader self-reflect on our own personal decisions about a “simple” thing as shaving. Interesting reading to say the least.

ADEOLA SHEEHY-ADEKALE’s Top Pick for September is… “Uncover Me: Freeing Becky” by Salma F

This is a hugely fascinating article offering the reader insight into the practice of wearing a hijab from a Muslim womans perspective. The writer uses her own experience to explain why Muslim women wear them, and the process of beginning to wear one and the impact it had on the way she saw herself. Importantly the writer reflects on her previous ways of viewing herself as beautiful being attached to her hair and how ‘losing’ that forced her to re-evaluate her self-image, the basis for her confidence and the way she interacted with the world around her. This in turn urges us, the reader, to reflect on how the external gaze impacts our self judgement and confidence and builds a point of universal connection between Muslim and non-Muslim women in their shared experience. It’s a powerful read.
