Five Steps to Continuous Learning in Your Product Company

Product design is simply a matter of pursuing an eternally receding better state.

If you are continuously shipping, you should also be continuously learning.

#1 Clarify Your Goals and Decisions

If you just “talk to customers” without a goal in mind, you will end up reacting to the loudest ones and all strategy goes out the window.

#2 Collaborate

Everyone contributing to the same decision should have the same information, otherwise you’ll just keep arguing about whose opinion is most correct.

#3 Questions and outcomes over methods and activities

Research is a simple three step process, whether you take a day or a year.

#4 Plug the memory hole

An example checklist for research interviews. Even if you do the same thing every time, why not have a checklist. It’s good for collaboration too.

#5 Learn and reflect and do it again

If you aren’t learning, and applying what you learn to decisions, it doesn’t matter how much research or what kind of research you do.
