Your customer is your boss. And your entire business revolves around him. Be relevant to him and you can boost your revenue consistently; ignore the red flags and you are well on your way to shutting the shop.

But how do you appease a boss you barely know?

You can’t. This is where customer profiles (also known as customer personas) come into the picture.

What is a customer profile?

A customer profile is an image of your ideal or average customer, complete with details of common characteristics such as demographics, visiting and buying behavior, as well as responses to direct communications.

In other words, customer profiling means getting to know your customers and segmenting them on the basis of certain common characteristics.

What products does he like and buy from you? Which form of communication gets through to him? What influences his buying decisions? On which days and hours do they come to your outlet?

An ideal customer profile should be able to answer these questions:

Who are your customers?
How well do you know them?
What is the best way to reach out to them?
When do they return to you?
What keeps them coming back to you over and over again?

Why is customer profiling so important that everyone’s doing it?

First, it’s obvious that bucketing your customers allows you to better understand their needs and cater to them.

But even more importantly, it helps you fine-tune your marketing efforts, thereby increasing conversions.

Ignoring customer profiling can cause more harm than good. It’s like sending out chicken biryani offers to vegetarians.

After a couple of days, they figure out your communication is irrelevant to them. And off you go into the spam folder.

Just like that, you lost a customer who might have had a high lifetime value.

At the same time, another business just earned a customer, perhaps for life.

How can you get started with customer profiling?
