Although music can be objectively good or bad, style preference and personal meaning play major roles in whether a song becomes a favorite or not. When Bill and Gloria Gaither wrote “Because He Lives,” they did not expect it to resonate with, or become a favorite for so many people. It was written out of such a specific experience in their lives that they thought they were writing just for themselves. Gloria explained, “It was so personal, I thought it might be just for us. It was the end of the ’60s when it seemed the whole world was falling apart.”

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives;
But greater still, the calm assurance:
This child can face uncertain days because He Lives!

The second verse in this song describes the revelation God gave them about bringing their third child into the world during such a volatile time. Even though the verse is very particular to the Gaithers’ situation, facing uncertain times is a universal experience. We all need the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, to cover us and help us through our own trials.

And then one day, I’ll cross the river,
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain;
And then, as death gives way to victory,
I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives!

God’s promises are for all people, and this simple song reminds us that no matter what is happening around us, we have hope, and we can worship our faithful God through both the good times and the bad. In awe, we sing amazing grace; in pain, we sing come, Lord Jesus; in adoration we sing hallelujah; and in the chaos of this world, we join the timeless anthem and declare that life is worth the living, just because He lives!

Thank you! to Corine Hilda for tagging me in the challenge; you can read about one of her favorite Christian songs here. I’ll tag Michael Miles and J.R. Heimbigner to write about one of your favorite faith songs if you’d like!
