Basic product guide for men and beginners in skincare

If you already have clear skin with no significant concern, congratulations! Everyone envies you. However, skincare has no gender and for every man trying to start taking care of their skin… you’ve come to the right place. Some men who have never touched skincare might be confused by the skincare guides that talk about niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, retinol, AHA/BHAs, and other skincare ingredients. I’m here to give you gentlemen and beginners the basic skincare product guide that you can easily understand and follow.

Skin types matter (a lot!)

First, know your skin type. Here are the main kinds of skin types and how you can determine which skin type you have.

  • Dry skin: dry skin, just like its name, has a lack of hydration, moisture, and oil production that makes it feel tight and flaky. It is also possible for dry skin to have increased sensitivity.
  • Oily skin: oily skin has excess sebum (oil) production that makes a shiny or greasy appearance. There’s also a common appearance of enlarged pores and blackheads found in oily skin. If you get this feeling after around 30 minutes or more after cleansing your face, you may have oily skin.
  • Normal skin: You don’t have a dry or oily feeling on your face. You don’t feel the tightness of dry skin, nor do the greasy feeling of oily skin. Normal skin can tolerate every skincare product without having issues.
  • Sensitive skin: You can have dry, oily, or normal skin, but also have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin reacts easily to some skincare ingredients or external factors which is shown by the appearance of redness, irritation, or burning feeling.

The basic products you need

By knowing your skin type, you can essentially choose your skincare products much easier.

Facial cleanser

Daily activities can make your skin build up sweat, oil, and dirt. Cleanse your face twice every morning and night before you go to sleep. As for which cleanser you must get, it depends on every skin type.

  • Cleanser for dry skin: go for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or glycerin that retain moisture. Avoid harsh sulfates or alcohol.
  • Cleanser for oily skin: look for ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to control oil production. Avoid oil-based cleansers.

Moisturizer

You have to keep the moisture in your skin to fight away dry and flaky feeling in your skin. If you have oily skin, you still have to use a moisturizer! Make sure to use moisturizer after you cleanse your face and still slightly damp.

  • Moisturizer for dry skin: look for ingredients such as ceramides and shea butter to provide your skin with deep hydration. Try the ones in the form of cream, and use it day and night after cleansing your face for extra nourishment.
  • Moisturizer for oily skin: opt for an oil-free moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Get the gel-based or water-based ones.

Sunscreen

Sunlight exposure, whether you’re indoors or outdoors, can cause harm to your skin or even lead to skin cancers. Everyone should get sunscreen with at least 30 SPF to protect skin from the damaging UV rays. Use it every morning after your moisturizer has fully absorbed by your skin.

  • Sunscreen for dry skin: try the ones in the form of lotions or creams rather than gels.
  • Sunscreen for oily skin: gel-based moisturizers are a good choice for oily skin.

Additional products

After those 3 products have become your daily routine, you can start incorporating some additional (but still basic, nothing extravagant or confusing) skincare.

Serum

Serums are often used after cleanser and before moisturizer. You can get various serum for various skin concerns. If you are new, I recommend you get a hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or retinol serum. Make sure you get the ones that suit your skin.

Mask

You can get any mask for every desired result such as moisturizing, anti-aging, brightening, deep-cleaning, etc. Every mask can be used differently, apply them according to the instructions.

Still want to go the extra mile in skincare? You must explore beauty devices to upgrade your skincare game! You can try FOREO for their ranging devices from facial cleanser devices to LED masks to maximize the benefits of your skincare product and reveal the best skin you ever feel.
