The skincare world literally never stops. Since last year, I have noticed some new skincare trends that are great to keep up with. Innovative ingredients like Snail mucin, Centella Asiatica, beauty devices such as LED light masks, and now it’s time for ceramides to shine. I’m pretty sure that you have seen ceramides as a skincare ingredient all over social media. But what are they?

What are ceramides?

Ceramides are waxy lipid molecules produced in the topmost layer of your skin. As the outer layer, ceramides play a big role in maintaining a healthy skin barrier by holding your skin cells together. You can easily find this skin barrier builder over the counter in the form of cream moisturizer or serums.

How do ceramides work?

Ceramides work by filling the gaps between your skin cells in the topmost layer of your skin called as stratum corneum. By that, the filled gaps will become a tighter seal and prevent water loss from your skin. This barrier created by ceramides also protects your skin from external damage such as pollutants, irritants, and dirt.

Benefits of ceramides for your skin

The skin barrier hero also has lots of other functions.

Building skin barrier

Like, of course, it helps in building skin barrier. Meaning that it will improve your skin’s protection and strengthen it.

Hydration retention

Ceramides fill the gaps in between your skin cells, making your skin able to seal the hydration and moisture within. This will result in plumpy and hydrated skin.

Supporting sensitive skin

A healthy skin barrier is a crucial thing for those with sensitive skin. The stronger the skin barrier, the stronger the protection, and less irritation. So if you have sensitive skin, you have to repair that skin barrier.

Reducing signs of aging

Ceramides are naturally produced in your skin. As we age, this production decreases, which then leads to wrinkles, dryness, and a less supple appearance. Using products containing ceramides can help you replenish the lost ceramides and improve the aging signs!

Side effects of ceramides

Great news guys, ceramics are considered a safe topical ingredient and almost have no side effects! It is also safe to use ceramides for daily use. However, if you have a certain condition or sensitive skin type, still conduct a patch test before fully incorporating it into your routine.

What to use and what to do with ceramides

While ceramides are commonly used in moisturizers, there are some ways you can enhance your skincare game by using them together with other ingredients!

“Can I use retinol with ceramides?”

Yes! Definitely a yes! Retinol works by removing dead and dull skin away and has the potential to irritate your skin. Combining retinol with the protective ceramides can increase the effectiveness.

“Can I use AHAs/BHAs/PHAs with ceramides?

Of course! It is highly suggested to apply ceramides after you use exfoliants. Similar to retinol, exfoliants remove dead skin cells on your skin. Following up with ceramides help in strengthen your skin’s barrier. It definitely will thank you.

“Can I use ceramides with niacinamide?”

Yes! Ceramides and niacinamide are a great pair! They complement each other’s benefits. Ceramides help build and maintain the skin barrier, while niacinamide offers a variety of benefits like minimizing pores and regulating oil production. Using both can enhance your overall skin health.

“Can I apply ceramides in the day? Is it safe to use ceramides every day?”

Yes, and yes! Ceramides help you prevent moisture loss, using them under the sun will really benefit your skin. You can use ceramides before your sunscreen. Daily use of ceramides is also considered safe as it has a low risk of side effects (still do a patch test tho!).
