In 1993, the United Nations designated today, March 22, as World Water Day. The intent behind this day is to inspire people to learn more about water-related issues, and to take action to make a difference.

Even though we celebrate water every day at Nebia, we couldn’t miss an opportunity to shout-out this incredible compound that gives us life and sustains our planet. But first, let’s clear something up. You probably learned in grade school that water covers 70% of the planet’s surface and is continuously recycled from the surface of the earth to the atmosphere and back again through The Water Cycle.

If this is true (and it is), then why do we need to conserve water?

The simple answer is that while the amount of freshwater on the planet has remained fairly constant since the beginning of time, the world’s population has exploded. So although water pours freely from the heavens and seems to flow endlessly in rivers, it’s a finite resource; we only have what we have.

And while it’s true that nearly 70% of the world is covered by water, only 2.5% is fresh water (the rest is saline and ocean-based). Of this 2.5%, just 0.8% is easily accessible for human use (the rest is trapped in glaciers and snowfields). So in essence, only 0.8% of the planet’s water is available to fuel and feed its 7.7 billion people.

What does this boil down to? We need to start showing water some respect.

At Nebia, we believe our place on this planet is shared and we all have a role to play in conserving our natural resources. Through our products, we aim to fundamentally change how people interact with water, starting with the shower. Collectively, Nebia showers have already saved over 100 million gallons of water, and we’re just getting started.

Change starts by thinking about our own water consumption and how we can use water more efficiently at home. We know that showers alone won’t solve the water crisis, but we are proud to contribute to a global, water conscious movement. So on this World Water Day, we challenge you to think about what role you can play in conserving water. Start with something small like turning off the water while you brush your teeth or conducting a home inspection to ensure you don’t have any leaks. Your wallet will thank you, and so will Mother Earth.
