In my previous low-poly articles, I’ve gone with quite large objects: a tree, a truck, a couch… For this new low-poly model, I decided to go back to the basics and make a little wooden crate in an RPG-like style.
The modelling of this object relies on a few Blender tricks:
- first and most importantly, the bevels! By selecting an edge and pressing Ctrl+B or selecting a vertex and pressing Ctrl+Shift+B, you can easily create additional faces in your geometry to smooth out or cut out the contours of your mesh. Note that depending on the number of segments you put in your bevel, you’ll get a hard cut or a rounded smooth corner/edge.
- then, you can quickly inset your faces with Ctrl+I: this automatically subdivides a face into a central face and a little “ribbon” of faces around it.
- also, you can use Alt+E to extrude the current selection along the faces normals — this is how I pulled all the inner faces of the cube at the beginning of the video
- and finally, I’ve just added a couple of edges with the loop cut tool (Ctrl+R) or the knife tool (K) and then moved the vertices around “randomly” to add some lifelike mistakes and imperfections
