You Are The Salt of The Earth
Jesus said these words in the Sermon on the Mount, You are the salt of the earth.
It’s an interesting thing to say. Let’s see what He meant.
In those days, salt was a valuable commodity as it was the only way to preserve food.
Salt also adds flavor to food.
And it is great for healing. When I was a nurse, I used Normal Saline (salty water) every day in my job, especially for cleaning wounds.
In this text, Jesus is comparing believers to salt, meaning our presence is essential in the world. We serve a purpose, like salt.
We can bring healing and life to those in darkness.
“We have the only message that can deliver people from the corruption of sin and give them eternal life.”

But there is more to this message.
Jesus warns the believers not to lose their saltiness.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
If we sin or fail to stay connected to God through prayer, fellowship, and study of the Word, we will lose our spirituality (saltiness) and no longer be good for anything.
We are to guard against sin and be a light to others.
We are to be like salt, bringing healing to others through our words and actions.
When we are filled with the Spirit we bring flavor to people’s lives.
Godly people are fun to be around because we don’t fill people with negativity, but instead bring them joy, peace, hope, and love.
They will see that we care about them, unlike so many others in the world.
We are supposed to be active in our faith, reaching out and touching lives.
And we must not allow the resistance of the world to stop us from being the light.
You are the light of the world, so let your light shine!
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
As I was researching this scripture, I stumbled upon this lovely hymn. I thought I’d share it with you.
