The most basic definition of omenology is the “study of omens”. Omens are traditionally defined as…

Something which portends, or is perceived to portend, either a good or evil event or circumstance in the future. A thing of prophetic significance. (Wiktionary)

In popular use, an “omen” is more likely to be associated with something bad (a “bad or evil omen”). Ominous is a related word that refers to an inauspicious omen. But like omen, “ominous” was historically used for both favorable and unfavorable circumstances (Wordnik).

As the Wiktionary definition indicates, we mostly think of omens as indicators or signs of future events. As such, they play a key role in fortune telling and prophesy. But they can also be a tool for gaining deeper insight into the current situation of an individual, place, or event.
