On 22 June 2020, The Hindu informed journalists in its Mumbai edition in a written communication that they will no longer be employed from 1 July 2020. The company has demanded that journalists tender their resignations to avail severance — three months of basic pay and daily allowance. The communication came the same day the Press Council of India took suo-moto cognizance of the company threatening journalists to resign.

A day earlier, on 21 June, 20 affected journalists in the Mumbai bureau wrote to The Hindu Publishing Group Broad asking for clarity about their employment status after they were informed on the phone to tender their resignations or risk being terminated.

On 18 June, the company verbally asked nearly 90 employees across various editions, bureaus and verticals, including nine in Karnataka, six in Telangana and 20 in Mumbai, to tender their resignations or risk being terminated, which they were told would look bad on their CVs.

The letter sent by V Jayaraman, the vice president of human resources of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited, is reproduced in entirety below.
