The Thrills of Suburbia

life in the burbs
isn’t all that bad
plenty of thrills
for this mid-age dad

big city living was
always overrated
stuffy, overpriced
people-saturated

I’ll take my sensible
sedan, any day
over a crosstown bus
or rickety subway

tree-lined jogging paths
open sky views
no jungle of high-rises
no death trap avenues

a backyard, wherein
my kids can roam free
their antics from my elevated
deck I oversee

no back-alley scuffles
to risk lacerations —
I limit my fights to
home owners’ associations

step aside, milk man!
I fetch my own proteins —
while flirting with soccer moms
down at the Walgreens …
