always dreaded
pins and needles
sharp, if neces-
sary evils

instruments with
pointy features
used in medi-
cal procedures

I grow light-hea-
ded and queasy
nauseated,
sick, uneasy

it’s a phobia
I realize:
fear of imple-
ments that incise

acupuncture?
thanks but no go
book my spot ‘cause
I’m a no show

I’ve got some news
for you all —
my body ain’t
no voodoo doll!

why would any-
one who’s able
choose to pierce
a nose or navel?

and while we are
on the topic
of vanity
acts myopic

dermal brandings,
tattoos? really?
this practice is
voluntary?

riffing on Harper’s National Tattoo Day, and written in Mary’s signature 4x4 style
