Statement

Two months after protest over Bowser Administration ‘DecrimNow’ testimony, demands on District of Columbia Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants (OVSJG) remain unanswered.

As No Justice No Pride secures third home to provide housing to homeless Trans Sex Workers, with funding only raised from community supporters, NJNP’s grassroots housing program is putting DC City Services to shame.

It was November 21st, one day after Transgender Day of Remembrance; NJNP along with allies and beloved co-conspirators from the Sex Workers Advocates Coalition lined the narrow hallways leading to the OVSJG Director, Michelle M. Garcia; as activists handed Director Garcia a petition signed by more than 2,000 DC residents in support of #DecrimNow demanding a retraction on testimony provided by the agency a month early, and funding for Transgender housing (in particularly funding that doesn’t restrict on age.)

With securing of a third Home, NJNP has now raised more than $100,000 for housing for Transgender women seeking safety within the past 365 days. While the city of Washington DC, can provide -easily- 20 times that amount to house all of the people who live in this city who currently are without access to housing; our demands upon OVSJG and the rest of the Bowser administration are stronger today than they ever were.

With the shameful evictions of multiple tent encampments in NE, We call on this city to do better. Do better.

No Justice No Pride —
No Justice No Pride is a collective of organizers and activists from across the District of Columbia. We exist to end the LGBT movement’s complicity with systems of oppression that further marginalize queer and trans individuals. Our members are black, brown, queer, trans, gender nonconforming, bisexual, indigenous, two-spirit, formerly incarcerated, disabled, white allies and together we recognize that there can be no pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.

About NJNP’s Trans Justice Program: Since its inception The Trans Justice program has been involved in coalitions around Decriminalizing Sex Work and Fare Evasion as well as other community safety oriented coalitions. Over the past year we’ve adjusted more and more to focusing on Emergency Rapid Response Support and mutual aid for TPOC: including housing, emergency care support, fundraising, legal support, and employment help.

About The NJNP Collective: Violence against sex workers often go unreported and unaddressed. Homelessness greatly exacerbates the violence an individual can experience as well as the dependency on the sex trade itself. We know this well at the NJNP Collective — which was created as an intentional community home for Trans current and former sexworkers in search of safe housing.
