Last week’s question: Deepti Anand

Q: “Are there foods to lower TPO antibody count?

A: TPO stands for thyroid peroxidase antibody. High levels of this antibody may indicate a thyroid autoimmune disease.

While there are no foods to directly lower TPO antibody count, if you have hypothyroidism your body’s metabolism may slow down meaning you should be sure to eat foods that control your blood sugar and blood lipid levels.

This includes fiber rich foods like whole grains, vegetables, fruits and nuts. These foods are also considered to be rich in antioxidants and could fight inflammation around your body and thyroid.

Also make sure to consume enough selenium and iodine. These foods are important for creating thyroid hormones needed to regulate the body’s metabolism.
