I’m delighted to be attending the upcoming One Team Gov Wellbeing Camp in Leeds on 6 June, and to be leading a session on behalf of the Charity for Civil Servants.

Since joining the Charity back in 2017, a large part of my work has been focused on how we can use digital technology to further our wellbeing support to the civil service community. From exploring basic Artificial Intelligence, to exploiting simple tech to improve the user journey and experience, we have worked with civil servants to test these new approaches.

You may have seen some of them; such as our interactive canine counsellor ‘DogBot’, our online Wellbeing Hub, or our virtual money advisor ‘JaneBot’.

All of these new tools have helped us to increase and broaden our reach in new and exciting ways. By providing support through a variety of channels, we have been able to promote the inclusion of end-users that we traditionally would have struggled to engage.

This is ‘DogBot’, the interactive canine counsellor.

Some of the barriers to inclusion have been easier to identify and overcome than others. It can sometimes be as simple as making support available outside of the normal ‘opening hours’ associated with a traditional approach, or using alternative communication formats. For others, it can be much more about how we communicate the support available, and make it real to different parts of our community. Providing the right information, at the right time and in the right way is a challenge for us all.

The key to addressing this has been the relationships and partnerships we have built with groups and networks across the UK, to understand the barriers to inclusion and work together to overcome them. We’ve made a good start; but we also have a lot more to do.

And so for our session at the One Team Gov Wellbeing Camp, we will explore the various different products and experiences that the organisation has been through over the last two years. We will focus on an overview of the design, build and testing of digital tools with the community, partnerships with third parties — through to the analysis of the impact on reach and how this has supported inclusion. We’ll demonstrate some of the different digital tools so that you can try them out for yourselves and share them with your colleagues. And hopefully, we can share and learn from each other’s experiences as continue the ongoing development cycle of our wellbeing support.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Kevin
