OPO.js meetup #7: Wrapping Up đ
The last meetup before summer is over and, not to toot our own horn, but this meetup of the Porto JavaScript Community was pretty epic:
Thatâs right, we had over 150 attendees this time, our biggest event ever đȘ. This was a pretty busy meetup, with 3 speakers, a first at OPO.js, an award ceremony, and the usual dinner and networking.
The community reaction was pretty great, I think itâs fair to say weâre getting good at this! đ
Read on to see what happened.
The talks đŁ
This one was pretty epic, covering topics ranging from datatypes for distributed computing, to web performance, to the balance between open source and life. If this peaked your curiosity, be sure to watch the talks below.
Pedro Teixeira opened the day with âCRDTs as the foundation for Distributed Web Appsâ. CRDTs have been all the rage recently, as a solution for synchronising state across distributed systems, and especially with the rise of decentralised Apps, which need a resilient conflict resolution solution, that is transparent for users. If youâre confused about what I just said, you need to watch Pedroâs talk.

Robin Drexler came in next, presenting âpreconnect, prefetch, preload, pre-what?â. Robinâs talk covered a few important topics on how to hint browsers how youâd like your page to load, optimising the experience for the end user. If youâre building websites, this is a must watch.

Finally, Benjamin Coe talked about his experience in âBalancing Open Source, Work and Lifeâ. As a respected open source contributor, doing key work at NPM, and with a powerful life story, his talk gave us great insight into finding a good balance in life. If youâre looking to make Open Source work part of your life, you need to watch his talk.

Ninja Challenge Award Ceremony đ
OPO.js hosted the award ceremony for the Ninja Challenge, a JavaScript hacking competition, and also an initiative supported by ScaleUp Porto.
The Ninja Challenge had over 600 participants, so congratulations to the winners, quite the feat đ.
Pictures đ·
As usual, weâve released the photo album on Facebook, so be sure to show us some â€ïž by liking the photos and tagging yourself.
Porto Tech & Creative calendar đ
Another topic we talked about at OPO.js, was the monthly calendar of creative and tech events in Porto.
We send out a newsletter with all key events in Porto every month, so you donât have to follow a thousand different pages. Youâre welcome!
If you want to follow the calendar, be sure to join the newsletter.
Thatâs it, folks. This was the last meetup before the summer break, see you in a couple of months, donât forget about us!
Weâll be sure to come back stronger after the break, and we already have a few surprises in store for you đ.
A big thanks to ScaleUp Porto, PĂłlo Zero, our speakers, and everyone who helped make this awesome meetup for the Porto JavaScript Community a reality.
