Last December 3, Ownly House of Art launched their first-ever tokenized physical exhibit on Ayala Malls Legazpi entitled Exploits and Effects. Local government officials, entrepreneurs, and art enthusiasts graced the event featuring the surreal artworks of Dan Vincent Barotilla, Glenn de Guzman, and Camelo “Mel” Baranda.

The exhibit not only highlights the spectacular artworks but also the supportive community that celebrates new art and tech ventures. The first portion of the event involved dynamic discussions about NFTs, and the second part is a gallery tour with the artists’ explanation of each piece.

Part One: Message from Local Government and Discussion About Blockchain Technology and NFTs

Mr. Chito Ante, the City Administrator of Legazpi, commended the team behind Ownly as well as the leaders of the present generation. He said the energy, creativity, and power to make innovations of the youth and pursue anything with passion are admirable. According to him, the local government values the initiative of Ownly in making an impact in the community.

Mr. Chito Ante, City Administrator of Legazpi,

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. But if you want to reach your destination, go with the right person. And the city is on the right track because we have these right persons who can impress, who have an effect, who can provide impact to our people,” Ante said.

After that heartwarming message, Ownly CEO Ismael Jerusalem gave a talk explaining what are NFTs and how NFTs works. He said that Non-Fungible Tokens can be used to provide proof of ownership not only to digital items but also to physical assets.

“Tokenizing physical art removes the inconvenience of shipping the physical art from one buyer to another. With the use of NFT, you only need to sell the token that serves as proof of ownership, and the transaction can be finished in a minute. The only time the item will be shipped is when a collector decided to redeem the artwork.”

“Aside from the efficiency of transactions between buyers, tokenizing physical art also removes the gatekeepers that artists have to go through when they want to get their work recognized and featured. With the use of NFTs for their physical art, they can now go directly to a global market full of interested collectors,” said Ismael.

Carl Andre Bongalos, a Senior Marketing Specialist from SparkPoint, another blockchain company in the country, also shared the different opportunities that anyone can find in the blockchain industry. He gave a brief explanation of what blockchain is and emphasized the importance of doing your own research when it comes to investments involving cryptocurrency. He also shared some examples of blockchain tech use cases such as money transfer, financial exchanges, and NFTs.

As Bongalos finished his discussion, an open forum was initiated to satisfy the curiosity of the community about blockchain and NFTs. One interesting question asked what is the future for NFTS, to which Jerusalem answered:

“It’s only a matter of time until almost everyone adopts cryptocurrency and NFTs. The present younger generation is already learning and using the fruits of blockchain technology so it won’t be long before these things become the norm in the future.”

Part Two: Gallery Tour and Interview with the Artists

After a lively question and answer portion with the audience, the artists together with Ownly’s Senior Marketing Specialist, Kina Añasco, guided the audience to a gallery tour. The artists gave brief explanations of the idea, inspiration, or message behind each of their pieces:

According to Dan Vincent Barotilla, the astronaut in his artwork Free Fall represents man and the chaotic environment around it is a symbol of our struggles as individuals. He said that the fall represents the decisions that we make as we face these hardships.

Barotilla said Comfort Zone is about taking up challenges, exploring, and trying out new things aside from the ones that we are already used to doing.

Altered Perspective is Barotilla’s crowd favorite artwork in this exhibit. He said that the piece is a reminder that there are many ways in which we can view something and that change is constant in our life.

Glenn De Guzman said Leave Me Alone is a representation of how when we focus on our negativities, it alienates us from everyone else.

According to De Guzman Live With It is an artwork that shows surviving suicidal thoughts. We battle with so much in our minds and he said that it is a reminder that we should take care of our mental health.

I’m Sorry is De Guzman’s third and final piece in the exhibit. He said that it shows that our lives should be anchored on the truth and not false promises. We should live an honest life and avoid empty promises at all costs.

Mel Baranda’s only piece in this exhibit is entitled Sleepless. He said it represents anxiety, depression, and the nights you lie awake not being able to rest your mind from the negative thoughts.

Exhibit Partners and Sponsors

The exhibit has been a huge success and we are more than grateful for everyone who made it possible including our partners and sponsors. Ayala Malls Legazpi has been a long-time partner in hosting creative events and we are thankful for their willingness to showcase local talents.

For our other sponsors, we thank Colored Candy Studio for the photography and documentation, Aral Lampara at Musica Sound System for the audio-visual setup, and Grazing Table by Ms. Izza for a sumptuous meal for our guests.

Future Exhibits from Ownly House of Art

As we tokenize physical artworks, Ownly House of Art will continue to promote the talent of traditional artists through exhibits in the following years. We aim to expand internationally and establish OHA’s physical gallery in Toronto, Canada — one of the largest art hubs in North America.
