If you read my first post, 99 Ways to Find a Husband in Dallas, then you know that I want to get married and am in search of Mr. Right. But I have no idea how or where I’m going to meet this guy.

99 Ways to Find a Husband in Dallas: Idea #2: Book Club

I enjoy attending book clubs, and have sometimes wondered if I could meet Mr. Right that way. Although most of the members of the book clubs I attend are middle-aged women, I’ll occasionally see a millennial-aged man show up. A couple of years ago, I attended a now-defunct book club that was specifically catered to millennials. There were a few single guys present. And I’ve also noticed — to no one’s surprise — that science fiction book clubs tend to attract more men.

This week, I attended a book club that was neither geared towards men nor millennials. I’d say the intended audience was probably suburban women over 50. I’ve changed a few details in the following story so that I don’t die of embarrassment after you figure out which book club I went to.

It was a breakfast book club. I feel like most of the book clubs that millennial-aged men attend take place in the evening. The book that we discussed was also not one that men would necessarily flock to. It was The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger, which I believe is considered “chick-lit.”

There were no men present at the meeting. In fact, there were hardly any people present at the meeting. The only attendees were the librarian in her 20s, an attendee in her 70s, and me. I had attended last month’s meeting as well, which had five attendees, including the same librarian. The librarian didn’t remember me. But she and the other attendee seemed nice, and I’ll probably go back to next month’s meeting. We’ll be reading Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen — another book which probably attracts more women than men. But maybe I could be wrong. Maybe my future husband will show up at the meeting, excited to talk about Marianne and Elinor Dashwood, and Colonel Brandon, and John Willoughby. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Look out for more of my blog posts as I discuss my Search for Mr. Right! And if you have any fun suggestions on how to meet a guy (e.g. I could ask my friends to set me up with someone and see what disastrous results occur), leave a comment!
