How To Play Team Beef VR Game Ports On SideQuest
From DoomQuest to Half-Life and Jedi Knight: Academy, here’s how you can play the most popular retro ports by Team Beef on SideQuest
Sideloading is built into the very DNA of SideQuest. We created SideQuest to help VR enthusiasts and developers release and play the apps and games they want most.
And some of those are classic retro hits ported into VR.
Perhaps the most prolific and popular builder behind these retro ports is Team Beef, with at least 14 classic ports under their belts and more on the way all the time. VR ports of classic hits like Doom, Quake, Half-Life, and more are ready to sideload on Sidequest right now.
Please note: While sideloading the VR ports is completely free, you will need to buy the official release on Steam first — many of them regularly go on sale and the links to the Steam listing you need will be in the SideQuest game listing from Team Beef.
Here’s how you can get your hands on Team Beef’s ports:
Get SideQuest’s Advanced Installer
First up, you’ll need to make sure you have our Desktop app up and running, and using SideQuest’s Advanced Installer is the way to grab it.
The Advanced Installer will unlock everything that SideQuest has to offer — getting you both the Desktop App and the SideQuest App on your VR headset.
Getting the desktop app can all be done in just a few simple steps. All you need is:
- Your computer
- A SideQuest account
- Debug mode enabled on your headset (to connect to SideQuest — if you don’t do this now, you’ll need to do it later!)
Once you have these three things at the ready, you just need to:
- Follow this link to the ‘Get SideQuest’ page
- Click on the Advanced installer package that matches your computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
- Download the file, run it, and follow the steps to complete installation — the SideQuest Desktop app will now open in a new window, letting you log in and browse!
From here, you can also get our in-VR app on your Quest headset if you choose — helping you browse and download the vast majority of SideQuest’s catalog cable-free! However, you’ll need the desktop version to get Team Beef’s ports up and running properly.
How to sideload Team Beef ports
You’ll find all VR game ports in the ‘Game Ports’ gaming category. Once you’ve found the Team Beef game you’d like to sideload, scroll down to the game description and you will find a detailed guide with a step-by-step process of installing that particular game on your Quest headset.
For most of the ports, the process works like this:
- Connect your headset to your PC/laptop using a USB cable
- Click ‘Sideload’ on the game page to start the process
- Grant app permissions using the ‘App Manager’ in the SideQuest app (watch the video below for more)
- Put your headset on, head to the ‘Unknown sources’ filter in your library, select the game, run it to the game menu screen, then exit the app — this will create a game folder on your quest
- Locate the install on your PC/laptop — if installed from Steam then it will be somewhere like C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamApps
- Copy the whole game folder to the newly created folder on your headset (This will take up to 10 minutes) using the file manager on the SideQuest app — once you have the folder located, you can just drag and drop
- Once the files are copied, find the game in ‘Unknown Sources’ again and start up the game!
Some Team Beef games, like Quake 2, come with 2 levels included as a demo if you only sideload the first step. But to access the full games, you’ll need to buy them on Steam — the instructions for where to find the version you need will always be in the SideQuest game listing.
