Facets of me
In case you’d like to know more of my bio than Medium lets me put into my profile.
Roland Weber, *1970, he/him
I’m a software developer, by heart and by profession. Or maybe I should call myself software engineer. Since 2015, I’m working on the backend side of what is now IBM Watson Studio. If you log in, start a Jupyter notebook, and the package you want to use is already pre-installed, working out of the box, that might be because of me. If the package you want to use is not pre-installed, and you cannot install it, because it depends on a missing native library, and you’re not allowed to sudo for adding that library, that might be because of me, too. 😁 I’m not a data scientist. Rather, I help to give them useful tools to do their thing.
Disclaimer: My activity on Medium is private, not business. The views and opinions I express here are not necessarily those of my employer. When I write a full-blown story that’s somehow related to my work, I’ll have it reviewed by my employer. This is to make sure I’m not accidentally leaking proprietary information, or otherwise acting against my contract. But I’m not being told what to post in stories or comments, nor am I getting paid for writing here. Not even by Medium, as I am not joining the partner program.
In my spare time, I prepare and teach lectures on Operating Systems (each spring) and on Distributed Systems (each autumn) at the Duale Hochschule BW in Stuttgart, Germany. My students there are heading towards a Bachelor’s degree. My course materials are in German, so there’s little point in linking them here. On GitHub, I have some small coding projects related to my lectures.
Once in a while, I might write a Medium story about a topic from my lectures. But only if I feel that I have some novel view to share. What I teach are mostly basics, and I’m not planning to spend time on just summarizing stuff anyone can find on the Internet. I need to give it a new twist to make it worth my while. I see Medium stories as an opportunity to present information in a more colloquial tone than I would use in my course materials. They’ll allow me to better match my teaching style in the classroom.
Furthermore, I’m practicing the martial art ALL-AACHT (see instagram), a no-nonsense Kung Fu style. While I’m not active on the big social media networks, you might spot me in some ALL-AACHT photos posted there, such as this one with Grandmaster Sigung Sifu Birol Barış Özden. Practicing ALL-AACHT since 2008 has done a lot for my physical and emotional health. And if need be, I can defend myself or people near me. Interestingly, many things I learned from ALL-AACHT are also useful in the ballroom dancing classes I’m taking.
That’s as much as I care to share about me at this time and in this place. I’m looking forward to finding your stories here on Medium, and hope that you’ll like some of mine, too. 😃
