Bathroom Renovation: Day 1

It’s started! I met the contractor at home just after 9:00.

After laughing at a few random things about the house, and coming up with more questions than answers about a few things (like what exactly is the middle switch just inside the front door actually supposed to control? Hint: it does nothing that we know of); the demo started.

When I left, he was just starting to remove the molding around the bathroom door. When I came home at the end of the day, I found this:

The old closet door frame

Buh-bye closet!

The closet walls are gone, the closet and bathroom doors have been removed (and saved for possible reuse in the basement remodel); and the sink has been disconnected. As far as I can tell, no major surprises yet, but he hasn’t opened up the wall to the plumbing…

That pipe with the fins on it in the last picture is our hot water oil heater pipe. This will need to be relocated. It’s moving to along the exterior wall, but that won’t happen until next week. Our oil company will be coming in to do that work, as well as removing some lines in the basement in preparation for those renovations.

Ok, so I guess there was one fun little discovery made.

See that wire going up the wall?

This picture is taken as if you were standing in the old closet, looking toward where the closet door was. This wire has apparently been hanging out in the open the whole time, and we never really noticed it, probably because it was tucked back in the corner, inside the closet.

It goes from a switch in the hallway to the overhead light in the hallway. Not really sure why the wire doesn’t run inside the wall, but we’re going to fix that.
