Crisis Not Capitalism Is The True Driver Of Innovation
We have lost our aspiration, and we desperately need to get it back.
It’s slightly depressing to read the news every day, even more so than usual just about now, as the subject of climate change has now become the apocalyptic “climate crisis” and it genuinely seems as if many¹ governments around the world are insistent on crashing economies to hit unrealistic green goals in as short as time as possible.
I can’t figure out if this pie in the sky approach to what can only be described as a form of green populism is yet another way of political parties staying in power through a kind of Top Trumps of green policies between themselves or whether they’re just delusional economics or law graduates who have little to no grasp on the actual science involved.
Of course the changes in the climate need to be addressed, of course it’s our fault for capitalising on the startlingly practically free energy that we’ve been digging up out of the ground, and of course things are going to get worse — but not overnight.
I believe that our whole approach to addressing climate change is flawed as it’s based on a fundamentally capitalist driven system where change can only be effected if it makes a profit — something that I’ve alluded to before.
