It’s that time of year again — the one where we all pretend like we’re going to stick to our New Year’s resolutions, even though we know well that we’ll probably break them by the end of January (or even sooner). And while New Year’s celebrations may be similar in many parts of the world, there are also plenty of unique and hilarious traditions that vary from culture to culture.

In China, for example, people celebrate the New Year by setting off fireworks and performing dragon and lion dances. But let’s be real — who wouldn’t want to start the new year by setting off a few (hundred) fireworks and pretending to be a giant dragon? It’s like the ultimate party trick.

In Japan, the New Year is celebrated with a visit to the temple, where people pray for good fortune in the coming year.

In Korea, the New Year is marked by traditional rituals and the wearing of hanbok, a traditional Korean dress. And while it may not be the most practical outfit for a night out on the town, there’s no denying that a hanbok would make for some pretty epic Instagram content.

And in the United States, they celebrate New Year’s Eve with parties, champagne, and the ball drop in Times Square. But let’s face it — who wouldn’t want to ring in the new year with a little bit of bubbly and a whole lot of reckless abandon?

In Kerala, although we do have our calendar we don’t give any importance to the new year which is ‘’Chingam 1'’ (we commemorate it as “karshaka dinam”)
So we usually celebrate the Gregorian new year.
No matter how you choose to celebrate the New Year, one thing is for certain: it’s a time to come together with loved ones, reflect on the past, and look forward to the future. So let’s raise a glass (of water, if you’re sticking to your resolutions) and toast to a fantastic new year!
