Biweekly update 2nd July — 16th July

Carpe Paradigm! Welcome to our biweekly update on Æternity! Actions speak louder than words for this company: during the past two weeks, they coped with a considerable amount of development. The aeternity MDW v0.7.1 was introduced; Stratum, a particular mode of a full node that turns off mining and turns on the Stratum server, was finally launched. Moreover, the second state channels showcase æpp is now live. SDK JS 4.2.0 and Python SDK 4.1.0 for aeternity are out! They are compatible with the upcoming node v4.0.0. The team announced the upgrade of a protocol in September: the Lima release will introduce FATE, a governance aepp and naming system auction. Aeternity is increasing — they are now in need of a blockchain enthusiast and marketing analyst eager to boost growth and effective content distribution. Æventures have partnered with MVP Workshop, and they have already come up with a proof-of-knowledge prototype in the form of a crypto gift card. Besides, the social activity of Æ-team is tangible: several articles and interviews came up. Also, Aeternity is sponsoring SpawnFest 2019. The community members are vigorous, and chats are full of Æ enthusiasts. The number of subscribers on Facebook and Reddit grows. Observe the æternal progress with Paradigm Fund!

  • Check out the forum post about the hosted compiler updates for July. For more information on how to use the compilers check the compiler page.
  • State channels breaking changes. As a consequence of the introduction of generalized accounts, there are some breaking changes to the state channels implementation that need to be merged (the changes are documented in this PR ). These changes will require a new major release of the node and consequently will require a new major release of the SDKs to support the new node version. On the positive side this will not impact consensus (no hard hard fork) and will not require change on the applications that use the SDKs since the changes are under-the-hood, but anyway it will require to eventually update your node and the SDKs on your app with it. Also if you are relying on the API Gateway3 for your app this will affect you. The plan is to merge this change for the next scheduled release that will happen in a bit more than 2 weeks time (around the 18th of July), followed by a release of the SDKs (Js/Py/Go) and with the API Gateway being upgraded one week after on the 25th of July. This release will be the v4.0.0 for the node.
  • One of the most exciting aexpansion proposals in aeternity concerns creating a standard for fungible tokens! It will be based on the battle-tested ERC20 standard. Here you can find a draft proposal for creating a standard for fungible tokens.

Social encounters

  • Aeternity is sponsoring SpawnFest 2019. Elixir and Erlang developers are welcome to register teams.
  • Ulf Viger explains why AEternity state channels are superior to other implementations — see on YouTube. A State Channel is a two-way interaction channel between two parties. State Channels make it possible to execute smart contracts off-chain, without fees, while keeping the same level of security that the blockchain already provides.

  • Why Developers Shouldn’t Shy Away From Blockchain Development — an interview with æternity Dincho Todorov on Altcoin Magazine.

“The key to the talent gap we are witnessing in the blockchain sphere is education; the key to the airtight code is extensive testing and peer reviews. æternity blockchain covers both grounds.”

  • Blockchain is such a dynamic field that code refactoring may often occur. Last month aeternity’s Thomas Arts and Tobias Lindahl were in Stockholm to talk about how to do it without worrying. Listen to their talk at CodeBEAMSTO event.
  • (Infra)structuring the Future: An Interview with Sascha Hanse — Read the past interview, dedicated to æternity’s developer talent to get acquainted. Sascha began programming 20 years ago and has spent the last 10 years working as a software engineer and lead architect. He was introduced to Bitcoin in 2011 and was immediately captivated by the diverse range of fields converging within blockchain technology. Today Sascha works as æternity’s lead blockchain engineer.

Partnerships and team members

  • The aeternity community is currently in need of an experienced Growth Hacker. The perfect fit would be a blockchain enthusiast and marketing analyst eager to boost growth and effective content distribution. Come join the amazing æternity family via link.
  • Æternity Crypto Foundation Names Emin Mahrt a Board Member — Emin joins the Foundation Board to help boost developer adoption and growth. Emin Mahrt spent the past two years first as Chief Operation Officer, and later as Chief Product Officer for æternity, making sure progress was consistent and seamless across all development teams working on the different facets of the platform.
  • Æventures have partnered with MVP Workshop. They have already come up with a proof-of-knowledge prototype in the form of a crypto gift card! Basically, be it a wedding or a birthday, you can create a custom-designed and printed paper wallet with a custom message that opens it up — and your crypto is there. In November 2018, MVP Workshop met with æternity’s business development team and concluded that our companies’ visions were remarkably similar and that they complement each other, which lead to a discussion about the partnership between MVP Workshop and æternity Ventures.
