Overview

Blockchain technology is already radically transforming the financial system. However, properties such as trustlessness and immutability aren’t only useful in monetary applications. Another potential application is governance. Blockchains could enable entirely new types of organizations that can run autonomously without the need for coordination by a central entity.

“Instead of a hierarchical structure managed by a set of humans interacting in person and controlling property via the legal system, a decentralized organization involves a set of humans interacting with each other according to a protocol specified in code, and enforced on the blockchain.” Vitalik Buterin

DAO stands for “decentralized autonomous organization” and can be described as an open-source blockchain protocol governed by a set of rules, created by its elected members, that automatically execute certain actions without the need for intermediaries.

In simple terms, a DAO is an organization that is governed by computer code and programs. As such, it has the ability to function autonomously, without the need for a central authority.

Like how DeFi is programmable money and how NFTs are programmable media, DAOs are programmable organizations of people.

Frameworks

Aragon

Aragon Launches Vocdoni a decentralized governance platform for traditional organizations: The Vocdoni digital voting protocol introduces an unparalleled layer of security, trust and efficiency to the standard guarantees of governance processes, enjoyed by associations, co-ops, trade unions, companies, and city councils. It provides an easy way for traditional organizations to utilize some of the tools that thus far have mostly only been used by digitally native organizations: fully transparent yet anonymous voting, direct communication between organizations and their social base, and a suite of membership and financial management solutions.

You may try it for yourself at vocdoni.app. In this first version, Vocdoni will offer the following features:

  • Create sovereign entities where you and designated administrators are the sole users able to manage the organization.
  • Create unlimited voting processes to satisfy all of your governance needs through an easy-to-use and intuitive interface.
  • Enable voting rights on-the-fly for every voting process you create.
  • Configure voting processes with multiple options, including live and encrypted, time-locked results.
  • Configure voting processes to start and end at preset times, both programmatically and manually.
  • Guarantee vote secrecy among voting participants and external third-parties.
  • Customize the voting experience by embedding live streaming of your event onto the ballot’s landing page and attach complementary resources (eg. Q&As, reports, documentation, etc.) to make available during the voting process.

Aragon’s vision for Vocdoni is to push its development beyond just digital voting as a mechanism for binding participation and signalling.

The first instance of the Aragon OpenStack — Aragon Voice — is now live on the Ethereum mainnet

Aragon Voice is a key component of the voting infrastructure for Web 3.0, powering unstoppable decentralized governance with zero voting costs. For the first time ever, anyone with an Ethereum address can design and implement On-Chain Proposals for their ERC20 project, where votes can be cast without gas fees, and are recorded as metadata both to Ethereum and IPFS, or Signaling Proposals that use a centralized backend but are universally verifiable on our custom vote-counting blockchain, Vochain. Only On-Chain Proposal creators need to pay the gas costs of deploying the information to mainnet.

Aragon Partners with Witnet for Gasless DAO Management on Discord: The Association announced its partnership with the Witnet decentralized oracle to provide off-chain, ‘optimistic’ voting for DAOs via Discord. Any Aragon DAO will be able to offer feeless, binding votes on DAO operations to any Discord channel member using only emoji reactions (👍 / 👎).

Aragon Association to Sponsor 2021 Gitcoin Grants Program: The Aragon Association will be sponsoring Gitcoin’s new Decentralized Governance (dGov) category for GR10 & GR11 — two upcoming rounds of the Gitcoin Grants Program, launching on June 16th.

The Common Stack

Commons Stack Review: Sprint 16 Companion Planting: Basil and tomatoes, carrots and onions, radishes and spinach — growing certain plants together help deter pests and increase productivity. The Commons Stack and the Token Engineering Commons have a mutually beneficial relationship, like these plant companions.

The Magic Behind the Commons Simulator — Part 3: The Closest Look: Get into the details of simulation mechanisms in the Part 3 of “Deep Dive” into the inner workings of the Commons Simulator . The Commons Simulator aims to inspire and empower communities to design their own economies with open source simulation tools.

Recommend reading Part 1 and Part 2 of the series in order to truly enjoy the feeling of your mind being blown as the pieces come together.

Background: The Commons Simulator is a community project funded entirely by Gitcoin Grants, and undertaken by the Commons Stack’s dDev team. The Commons Simulator blends art and simulation into a dystopian sci-fi future where you travel back in time with cadCAD, a complex systems simulator that can predict the future.

Check out two new DAO Discussions:

  • DAO Discussions 1: Do DAOs improve or dehumanise collaboration and coordination? Interested in new ways of collaborating and coordinating? DAOs have been described as the next frontier of human organisation, but is this true? What are DAOs anyway? What role might they have to play in our future? What’s the reality of DAOs versus the theory? What could DAOs mean for you and the work you do? The panel explores the question: do DAOs offer us improved collaboration and coordination? And what might this mean for our work, our organisations, and the world?
  • DAO Discussions 2: Do DAOs Offer Us A New Way of Governing The Commons? Could DAOs be a critical tool for governing the commons? And what might this mean for how we organise and manage our shared resources?

Exploring Polycentric Governance in Web3 Ecosystems Workshop: Jeff Emmett, Jessica Zartler, Renzo D’Andrea and Livia Deschermayer of Commons Stack, Block Science, Token Engineering Commons and Change the River, share two frames for governance research and design: The Decision Space & The Voting Space. In these knowledge sharing and interactive sessions, they discuss the importance of deciding how to decide, why cultural frameworks feed tooling and introduce different types of voting and new Web3 voting tools, including Conviction Voting.

API3 DAO

API3DAO Core Technical Team Development Report: May 2021 has been a particularly productive one regarding DAO development, which has also interrupted the DAO & Staking series (1, 2, 3).

The Serverless Framework dependency at the Airnode deployer has been replaced in favor of Terraform. This will allow to port Airnode to other cloud providers and extend it with additional cloud infrastructure (or provide it as a module to be added to existing infrastructure) a lot more easily.

The work on dAPI contracts was continued. Considering that dAPIs are a fairly isolated vertical in terms of implementation and operation, a dAPI team separate from the core technical team is being considered. Including having a separate DAO development team and the integration work being undertaken by the business development team members, this allows the core technical team to focus more of its efforts on Airnode, which should improve efficiency.

API3 and Moonbeam Bring Off-Chain APIs to Polkadot: API3 has integrated with Moonbeam, the project that simplifies the process for Ethereum applications to expand to the Polkadot ecosystem, making APIs effortlessly available to multi-chain applications. Moonbeam offers a full implementation of Ethereum on Substrate, and allows Ethereum developers to deploy existing smart contracts and dapp frontends to Moonbeam with minimal changes. Moonbeam benefits from lower gas costs than Ethereum, and the cross-chain functionality of Polkadot.

Partnership with Credmark: Credmark has built a data platform that allows developers to build, test and distribute risk-adjusted financial models. One of the most important requirements for creating these models is the use of highly accurate and reliable data sources, as well as having a variety of different data types. API3 will be partnering with Credmark to provide such data sources, and to serve Credmark’s data over Airnode to all supported blockchains.

Partnership with Shield Finance: Shield Finance is a multi-chain DeFi insurance aggregator. Shield Finance will deploy Market Crash Protection contracts for API3, and also assist API3 in making this feature available to API3’s community. Shield Finance will also explore opportunities to use API3’s dAPIs (data feeds) once these are operational.

Announcing the Partnership with HAI DAMO: API3 announced the partnership with Hedge Against Inflation DAMO (Decentralized Asset Management Organisation). Hedge Against Inflation is a project designed to minimize the risks associated with the volatility inherent in crypto markets. API3 will be providing Airnode-enabled API data and dAPIs to enable this.

There were no active API3 governance proposals these weeks.

Badger DAO

BadgerDAO and Polygon Partner to Bring Bitcoin Crosschain: BadgerDAO will partner with Polygon to accelerate the adoption and utility of Bitcoin on their network. With the mission to bring BTC to DeFi, BadgerDAO wants to make it as easy as possible for users to put their Bitcoin to work where there is plenty of utility. Polygon has seen explosive growth in the last few months with over $7.4B in total value of assets locked and $1.3B worth of BTC already being utilized in protocols like Aave and Sushiswap. This clearly shows a demand for BTC and together with Polygon BadgerDAO can help grow that footprint substantially.

ibBTC and bBadger Now Accepted as Collateral on Ruler Protocol: Ruler Protocol is now accepting ibBTC and bBadger as collateral for borrowing and lending stablecoins along with farming to earn Ruler and Badger tokens.

Badgers In the Sett: A DAO Treasury Retrospective (Volume I): Since launching in December, Badger DAO has generated over $18.1MM total revenue at booking ($15.1MM at current prices), >90% of cumulative revenue has been driven by core strategies; and in the month of May the DAO generated more than $2.8MM of booked Revenue across all product lines including the new Bridge and ibBTC.

Total Revenue shown non inclusive of ~$20K in FARM revenue.

Index Coop

Introduction to the INDEX Token: The Index Coop is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that exists to create and maintain crypto-native structured products built on DeFi asset management primitives (e.g. Set Protocol). As a DAO, Index Coop is governed by its community members. Collectively, they propose and vote on new products, the allocation of the treasury, and the future direction of the DAO. This is where INDEX comes in.

Index Coop Grants Parameter Controls to Multisig: this change is intended to avoid future failed votes for key parameter changes. Index Coop has generally seen strong voter participation since inception last fall. But with the launch of leveraged indices on ETH and BTC, the demands on governance have increased considerably. Failure to pass critical parameter change proposals in the past month have led the community to reassess their governance processes.

View from the Nest #30: The newsletter aims to share what we’ve been up to week by week in the Coop, highlighting progress across products, governance and the Index community as a whole.

Lido

LidoDAO Proposes Optimistic Voting for Basic Updates: Future validator limit increases would be approved by default unless a challenge threshold is met.

Similar to Index Coop, Lido DAO has also experienced issues with key parameter change proposals. Lido maintains decentralization and mitigates staking risk by spreading out validator deposits among many staking service providers. LDO voters are responsible for periodically increasing the maximum validator limit for each provider to accommodate new deposits. But recently these routine votes have run into difficulties.

LidoDAO’s Aragon governance implementation requires a minimum of 5% support for even basic proposals. With many large crypto investors busy at the BTC conference in Miami this past week, the DAO was unable to reach quorum leading to a failed limit update proposal. This in turn delayed the onboarding of newly deposited Ether into the beacon chain, which would cause a negative impact on stETH returns at the margin.

Maker

Making Maker: May 2021: In May, the MakerDAO community added additional Vault types to the Liquidations 2.0 framework and voted on Oracle updates, Core Unit budgets, and more.

The Maker Community’s Next Call to Adventure: What started as a handful of open initiatives, Community Development’s programs expanded to support a growing MakerDAO.

Each community member has the potential to cross the threshold into a new adventure: participating in a fully, decentralized MakerDAO. If you’re interested in participating in the community, you can:

Uniswap

Uniswap v3 has been deployed to Arbitrum mainnet: After a months long period of relative inactivity, Uniswap governance is now beginning to see a burst of activity. This is a welcome change for a protocol that had faced criticism for lack of participation.

The first proposal [Closed May, 28] to break the seal was submitted by former Maker dev and community member Andy8052. He advocated for launching on the Arbitrum rollup to allow Uniswap to better serve users across various EVM compatible networks. While this might seem like a no brainer, there are a few reasons why this was far from assured.
