Deliveroo — an international technology company focused on selling and delivering food from the best restaurants directly to their customers’ door — is building an omnichannel experience with payworks and Stripe.

The combination of advances in technology is driving a new trend, we could have not imagined a few years ago. Low barriers to build apps and websites and simple ways to set up online payments lets businesses operate for years without ever touching cash.

My gym only accepts online payments. I can browse through their courses from home or work using their mobile app. If I decide to attend one, I need to book it by paying in advance. Since I live very close, this is very convenient for me. I leave my apartment five minutes before the class begins, no need to wait in line or carry my wallet on me.

What happens though when these type of businesses encounter the need to accept face to face payments? Signing up for a merchant account and getting a card reader is a cumbersome process — even today. Sending paperwork back and forth between bank and business to be able to start processing only months later is not an option for this type of companies. To keep up with their fast pace development they need to move offline as fast as they are able to do online.

No fancy hardware required: just an app and a mobile card reader.

At payworks, we work with innovators to help them achieve these goals. One of them is Deliveroo. Even though they deliver food for thousands of customers across Europe daily, since they started in 2013 they have never touched cash, or how they call it “we don’t party like it’s 1999”. Dealing with card payments only, lets Deliveroo provide their customers with the best possible experience. At the same time they create a safer working environment for their drivers.

However, for the launch of their new service - renting out bikes to their drivers — Deliveroo needs to accept card present payments. To set this up quickly, they turned to us. Deliveroo adopted the payworks PayButton for Stripe (we’ve written a whole article about it here) and use their existing Stripe merchant account to process payments. The result: within minutes they let their drivers rent bikes with a quick card swift.

This is just one of the examples where the synergy between online and offline plays a key role in catering with customers’ expectations and keeping up with new features.

We believe that accepting card present payments should be easy and straightforward. payworks provides the infrastructure to back this up, hiding the complexity of EMV Chip & PIN processing behind our easy to use APIs.

Are you a businesses or do you have merchants who want to accept EMV payments over Stripe? Have questions or feedback? Get in touch!
