Exactly 6 months ago today, the revamp of greenpeace.org, code name Planet 4, was announced. At that time, there were only a few key concepts to guide the development of this new engagement system: it would be built on Wordpress, it would aim to drive people to action and it would be developed using open collaboration and decision principles.

Looking back at what happened in the past 6 months, it is nice to note that the established P4 team, the documentation and posts shared, and the general approach to distributed and open work have all been faithful to these commitments.

Planet 4 needs to be cutting-edge, openly-developed using Wordpress technology, provide new opportunities for campaigners to engage with the public, empower people, suit most needs of national and regional offices, be extremely secure but at the same time highly customizable… oh, and it needs to be finished yesterday. Additionally, stakeholders are numerous, and everyone must be kept informed, excited and engaged. Woah.

In 6 months from kick-off, it would have been impossible for the project team to complete the Discovery Phase, embark the Concept one, clarify the Engagement strategy, onboard professionals, implement a project methodology and gather requirements of most offices without the help of more than a hundred volunteers. To them all goes our gratitude, and to the future hundreds our call for help.

The new greenpeace.org, and all its versions, needs your passion, “super powers”, enthusiasm and patience. We are not just designing and developing a new website. We are trying to change mindsets, creating a tool to help us understand how our voices can influence social change and show that we have multiple ways to take action for our planet.

Contributing to Planet 4 helps Greenpeace be boldly innovative and radically open. You are most certainly a part of it. Following along, leaving comments, reaching out, sharing ideas, spreading the word about this work continuously proves there are plenty of rainbow warriors.

Exciting times are ahead, taking Planet 4 through Design, Testing and Implementation phases will be a beautiful journey. If you haven’t already, join the team, every action counts: each tweet using the #Gpp4 hashtag, every new member of the P4 Google Group, every comment to posts and follower of this publication and every click to the Wiki page.

2017 will be a Planet 4 year, bring it on.
