Intolerance and illiberal thought are on the march in almost every major American institution — in politics, higher education, and NGOs; publishing, corporate governance, and even the law. But a diverse society cannot endure or prosper without an open public square where ideas and arguments can be freely debated without fear of retribution or anathematization. Free speech is a constitutional right in the United States, but it’s just one component of the broader and more diffuse liberal values of pluralism and tolerance. No brief or ruling can alone tell us when stigmatization and deplatforming cross the line into discrimination and censorship. These are values we have to define and defend ourselves. This platform aims to do its part, providing original commentary and aggregating the best work being done on the illiberal impulses that threaten freedom and social cohesion.
