We had a long holiday in February because there was 설날(lunar New Year’s holiday), the biggest holiday in Korea. Nevertheless, we successfully updated the features we had planned!

Our goal in February was to improve search and collection feature.
Now, let’s check the changes in Scinapse.

Search feature

🔎 Updated Author name search
As shared in the past updates post, Author name search feature is divided into two phases.

In the first phase, only the top two authors were shown inSearch results page. With this second phase update, a new section has been added to Search results page where you can limit your results to show only the authors.

Now, you can more easily access the authors!

🔎 Added the conference information
We have indexed the data for the conference proceedings. Through this, the database coverage had been reinforced.

🔎 Updated UI of Sorting box in Search results page
The existing sorting box in Search results page is transformed into a button shape that can be easily checked at a glance, thereby enhancing intuitiveness.

🔎 Updated UI/UX of Paper filter box
Paper filter feature is very useful for those who want quick screening for discovering papers. So, we improved the UI/ UX of Paper filter feature to make it more clear and intuitive. The changes are:

  • Combined the information of journals and IF
There was feedback that IF filter was not necessary because it was difficult to set a certain range. Moreover, IFs are eventually descriptors on journals (which has its own filters). Therefore, in order to solve this problem, we removed IF filter and now we show the IFs next to the journal filter.
  • Changed the Published Year filter into a range slider
The range of the Published Year is set more easily and visualized more intuitively with the slider. It also leads users to check the trend information for the keyword.
  • Bug fixed
Filters were reset when sorting criteria were changed. Now they don’t.
Before / After

🔎 Updated to show the last author in Search results page
This feature is for exposing the corresponding authors of papers in Search results page. It was based on the common practice in most disciplines that last authors are usually corresponding authors. For more background on this, check out this post.

If the paper has more than 4 authors, it shows the first, second, and last(corresponding) authors. If you want to see the other authors, click the + N Authors button.

🔎 Updated to show the Collection where you saved the paper
On the Search results page, you can see immediately see whether a paper is already in your Collection. You can see it over the paper titles. If you click the name of the collection, you can directly visit that Collection.

Collection feature

🔎 Updated CRUD(Create, Read, Update, Delete) of Memo in Collection
Collection was improved by adding more interfaces for editing the memos. Previously it was only available in Paper show page, and now you can also edit the memos in Collection show page.

Now, you can easily leave memo on individual papers as you read them, or collectively as you manage your Collection.

🔎 Modified Collection feature Policy
The existing Collection policy has a default collection. This is due to the origin of Collection feature, which was simply like bookmarking. We’re modifying the policy both for a better experience and for users’ awareness.

  • Before — When the user signed up for Scinapse, a default collection ({username}’s Collection) is made automatically. It is unable to edit the name and description.
  • After — When the user signed up for Scinapse, a default collection (Read Later) is made automatically. It is able to edit the name and description.

Others

  • Adjusting the Search-boost score and Filtering the data
To provide better search results, we adjusted the boosting score about search results and filtered out the meaningless data.
  • Modified User Box UI
We added the user name and mail address which users filled in when they signed up to User Box.
  • A / B test
We did A/B test with the features we developed in workingshop for 2 weeks. Currently, we completed A/B test and are trying to improve the features.
