Career Pathways is our creative twist on conventional lecture-style career talks where students actually get their hands dirty and experience different careers through experiential activities to truly understand the career.

Just as what I remembered when I was their age, many of these Secondary Three students were clueless about what they wanted to become when they graduate and what to pursue. It’s days like these that reinforce the purpose and meaning behind what we do here at Praxium —
Empowering our future generation to make better career choices for themselves and work towards aspirations they care about.

Hospitality & Travel ✈️

Professional: Evon
Occupation: Flight Attendant

Being a flight attendant is more than just having a pleasant demeanour. Apart from ensuring passengers feel comfortable and satisfied, it is also important to know how to handle emergency and security situations.

Students took turns to roleplay as flight attendants and passengers to different real situations that Evon faced during her flights.

IT & Software 💻

Professional: Joel Tong
Occupation: Software Engineer @ SIA

Anyone in software engineering can tell you that the work is all about problem solving and creating new solutions out of nothing. We translated that into an activity where students had to brainstorm a solution to a problem they face in their everyday lives. Joel also shared about his motivations for embarking on his journey as a software developer and the many challenges he had to overcome.

Design 📝

Professional: Benjamin
Occupation: User Experience Designer

Benjamin brought students on a journey to experience a snapshot of his life as a user experience designer. Using real design principles and concepts that he uses when handling various projects for clients, he tasked students to design the ideal wallet for their friend. Other than thinking about functionality and appearance, Benjamin prompted these ‘budding designers’ to think deeper about user emotions, behaviour and needs.

Law ⚖

Professional: Scarlett
Occupation: Litigation Lawyer

Having to read and analyse legal documents was definitely very new and unfamiliar for majority of the students. In this session, students had to analyze various legal documents to justify how much matrimonial assets their clients were entitled to in a divorce case. Scarlett also addressed some of the misconceptions and stereotypes that students about the legal profession.

Read more: In another school, we also introduced students to a moot court simulation where they argued their cases in front of a judge.

Entrepreneurship 💼

Professional: Nasrul
Occupation: Social Entrepreneur

It’s always an uphill battle for entrepreneurs like Nasrul and he shared with students through an activity the importance of knowing your value proposition and how uniquely different you are from your competitors.

Healthcare 🚑🏥

Professional: Priscilla
Occupation: Nurse

Besides sharing about the different roles in healthcare, Priscilla led a roleplaying activity where students had to make critical decisions for patients in different scenarios. The students experienced the daily dilemmas and emotional journey that healthcare practitioners go through everyday.

Engineering 🔨💡

Professional: Lih Wei
Occupation: Electrical Engineer/CTO & Co-founder of TinyMOS

Besides hearing about Lih Wei’s experience as an electrical engineer and CTO of TinyMos, students got to experiment and play with different electrical circuits and models. Aside from having technical skills and expertise in electrical engineering, it also helps to always have a vested curiosity and interest in circuits and models.

We are very thankful to have these 7 amazing professionals who took time off to share their passions with the students. It’s a first step to impacting and empowering our young ones towards building meaningful careers for themselves.
