It is a terrifying thought — but one that must be considered.

Are we alone in the universe?

A recently published paper, authored by five prominent NASA scientists, says that ancient alien civilisations are likely to have wiped themselves out before becoming multi-planetary species — adding to the ‘Great Filter’ theory.

The paper argues that the threats our civilisation is currently facing, like climate change, pandemics and the potential for nuclear war may have already sealed the fate of other life forms in distant planets and galaxies.

And this could be the destiny of Earth if we don’t begin taking current global issues more seriously.

“Carelessness leading to failure is not an option. We are the only ones who can help ourselves; there should be no expectation of mentors or saviours to step down from the sky on our behalf,” the paper says.

However, the paper isn’t all existential bad news.
