On SoundCloud, he goes by Jthap. Here at Eastside High School, he goes by his given name: De’Tahj Jones.

He is in the tenth grade and is well-known at Eastside and throughout the Antelope Valley for his music. Jthap started rapping last year and know he’s got everyone singing along. He’s done shows as far away as Long Beach.

His most successful song, called Take Over, has over six thousand plays. Jthap’s also made a song with Hoodrichh Zay, who’s also a SoundCloud rapper.

“He’s a good rapper,” says fellow SoundCloud musician Musiq Johnson. “He just needs to work on rapping with the beat.”

“ The beat ain’t good for him to rap to, but it’s cool,” agrees Michael Rivers. He hopes that Jthap’s future songs feature a slower beat because it might make for easier listening.

Before Jthap started rapping, he was just a regular student at Eastside. He decided to start rapping rapper when he was over at a friend’s house.

Rapping was Jthap’s way of getting heard. “It isn’t easy doing music because you have people that hate and talk down on you,” he says. “Keeping your mind set on what you want is the only way you’ll make it in the rapping and singing career.”

“You just have to chase your dream,” says Jthap.
