Labels

Labels, and how helpful they are, is a discussion that pops up now and then among 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Some love them, some hate them, but debates usually end up in that everyone should be allowed to use or not use the labels they wish.

But when an anti-LGBTQ+ Christian weighs in, they routinely pronounce that any and all queer labels are bad, and that you should not use them at all. Not for other people, even if they use them for themselves, and definitely not for yourself.

You see, our identities are to be in Christ, not in our “sin.” Forget that Christians have never been able to agree on what is or isn’t sin. Forget that many Christians take pride in identities like “American” or “Republican.” Forget that Jesus Christ himself never said a word about queer identities.

Dan Delzell is pastor of Wellspring Lutheran Church in Papillion, Nebraska. While other, more well-known conservative Christian leaders have been attacking Pastor Andy Stanley recently for being too compassionate toward 2SLGBTQIA+ people, Delzell has taken particular exception to Stanley’s usage of the label LGBTQ+ for children.
