Web3 TCG Series

World of Woarcraft (WOW) and League of Legends (LOL) are games that anyone who likes to play knows. The two games each expanded their worldview to Metaverse and released a new game. WOW released a game called “Heartstone” and LOL released a game called “Legends of Runterra.” Heartstone is a trading card game (TCG), while Legends of Runterra is a collecting card game (CCG). They have something in common that players collect their cards and participate in the gameplay with them.

Then, why are games that are already loved so much expanding into card game genre like TCG and CCG? This is because the card game genre itself is most advantageous for Metaverse expansion. In card game, players can own cards, which makes them feel closer to the game. However, the limitation of these games is that when the game disappears, the card that the player has also disappears. If the card is issued in NFT format, the player will be able to fully acquire ownership of the card.

Let’s take a look at Gods Unchained, TCG genre of Web3 with these characteristics.

Part.0 — Gods Unchained Intro

Have you heard of Gods Unchained? Gods Unchained is a game that combines blockchain and TCG genre. Player collects multiple cards to form a powerful deck. Players will use their own deck to battle with other players. So players must strengthen their deck well considering the attack power, physical strenght, special ability, and cost (mana) of the cards they have.

The difference between Gods Unchained and Hearthstone and Legend of Luntera is that the card used in the game is entirely owned by the player. Players can purchase and sell cards through Tokens rather than in-game currency. In the case of TCG genre, card transcantions are frequent. So there should be less burden on card transactions such as fees and time. In Gods Unchained, it runs on Immutable X, which support zero gass fees, so players can enjoy the game without feeling burdened by card transactions.

Part.1 — Gameplay

Gods Unchained Gameplay Tutorial

Gameplay is very simple. The Player starts the game with 30 health and with the Deck he set. It’s a turn-based game, and when it’s player’s turn, he can use Mana to use the card he have in his hand. Eventually, if player make the opponent’s health zero, he win the game.

Players can purchase cards from other players to develop their decks. They can purchase a Card NFT using $ETH, $GODS, $IMX, etc., and use it for Gameplay.

Part.2 — Economy

Gods Unchained Play Loop

Gods Unchained’s ecosystem flows around $GODS Token. Players can get $GODS through gameplay. The acquired $GODS can be used to make the Card NFT or to purchase Card NFTs sold by other players. Players who own Card NFT can sell the Card NFT through other Token such as $ETH and $IMX.

Fusing new NFTs

Players can use $GODS Token to make their own Card NFT. Combining two non-NFT cards creates an NFT. The $GODS used in the fusing process will be accumulated to Staking Pool.

Buying Packs & Chests

$GODS Token can be used to purchase Card Packs or to purchase Card NFTs sold by other players. 20% of the $GODS used by the Player will be accumulated to Staking Pool. Players can use other Tokens such as $ETH other than $GODS. However, if they use these Token, 20% of the purchase amount is automatically converted to $GODS and used for the purchase. This means that no matter which Token you use, 20% of your purchase will be paid in $GODS, which will be accumulated to Staking Pool. This structure creates an ongoing demand for $GODS, helping the $GODS ecosystem to be sustainable.

Active Staking

Staking rewards will be distributed to all players that qualify as being active stakers. Rewards will be claimable by all users who qualify at regular 7 day intervals, and will provide an amount of $GODS to the user proportional to the lowest amount held in their Immutable X account.

Part.3 — Tokenomics

The Tokenomics of Gods Unchained is shown below. P2E Rewards allocated 34% of the total for active players who play an important role in maintaining the ecosystem. In addition, the 20.5% assignment to the Community and Ecosystem Fund suggests that the team understands that Community plays an important role in the game.

Part.4 — Opinion

The First Web3 TCG

I think it is the first game to bring TCG genre, which is already loved a lot by Web2, to Web3. The card NFT owned by the player is entirely owned by the player, so I think players can have fun collecting actual cards. Also, as the old Yu-Gi-Oh did, new cards continue to emerge over the season, adding new fun to the players.

A User-friendly Environment

For Immutable X with Gods Unchained, it minimizes the burden players feel on NFT transactions. Players can exchange NFTs without a transaction fee. Immutable X also supports up to 9000 tps to prevent players from feeling uncomfortable due to transaction delays.

It’s been about two years since Gods Unchained was released, but about 10,000 people still enjoy playing games a day. If Web2 TCG players move on to Web3, Gods Unchained will be loved more than it is now.
