This is part of my #productidea 30 day challenge on which each day I write about a new product idea.

Let me share a counter-intuitive idea. Netflix has based its success on its offer of thousands of movies and TV shows at any time. You come back from work and you can watch the next chapter of the TV show you’re following, a movie or a documentary. You can watch as many as you want in fact.

However, I would say most people who have Netflix keep doing channel surfing to see if there is a new show or something they can talk about at that moment on Twitter, Facebook or WhatsApp or the next day at work. The top hashtags around 8–12pm come usually from TV channels. The more popular a hashtag, the more people will turn on that channel. People want to feel part of a group. It could be a WhatsApp group with friends, the twittersphere or the coffee with work colleagues next morning.

What if Netflix creates its own channels with a mix of new and old content? Imagine a comedy channel, a kids channel, a drama channel, a documentary channel, etc. Netflix users would have them on their mind, they could be a default option if they don’t have anything on mind to watch, and more importantly, they would be able to talk about them with friends, as millions of users would be watching them.

It could be another way of capturing people attention, the most valuable resource nowadays.
