Can we achieve true democracy using blockchain?

To answer this question, first we have to understand where we are, and why we need it? What we have is representative democracy instead of direct democracy. The situation is even worse when it comes to labor. Human beings are very attached to labor. This is what makes us what we are, its in essence makes us human. It lets us bend nature and create something new. Therefore democracy in workplace becomes even more important. But post industrialized organizations completely ignored this facet of human existence. They thought that by keeping decision making in the hands of few, they can have more faster and leaner organizations. They wanted to commodify labor, to be done by the dumb masses, while the decisions on how to efficiently run business are to be made by the entitled few. Since they control decisions they also get to pocket most of the profits. Well this worked for a while when human beings were being used in the factory line and demotivated workforce didn’t matter to the company bottomline. But now we are entering an age where these kind of jobs are being replaced with automation. The jobs which need human input will need all facets of human nature like creativity, ethics etc. If we run this new jobs in the same way we did in the past, we will fall into the same trap. But this time the consequences are far more grave. For instance lets talk about software development. For now most software is still being hand written by developers, and machines are still not writing code. But most enterprises write software the old fashioned way with rigid hierarchies. There are directors, project managers, architects etc.. and in the bottom of the food chain comes developers. There are far reaching consequences of this approach. First the developers are demotivated and don’t care about what they are trying to build. Then things like ivory tower architects come into the picture. Since all decisions are made centrally by one man, be it a manager or architect, it usually is a bad decision, resulting in lost time, money and productivity. I know most developers in technology space will relate to this issue. But this issue is plaguing our society in general. Disenfranchised workers are not interested in what they are doing, leading to decreasing human productivity, income inequality, economic stagnation, recessions and giant problems facing humanity (like climate change) never getting resolved.

The Solution

So how do we get around this? What i am suggesting is using the blockchain to implement democracy in workplace. Through a series of blogs i will explain how to do this. I am also developing a Distributed App (DAPP) to achieve this. The site is currently under development, so please post comments, on bugs you find, and what you would like to be improved on. In my next blog i will explain how this DAPP works.
