This is a response to this response by Marcus aka Gregory Maidman to his own prompt to reimagine a sacred text:

“It dawned on me one night how screwed up the story is of the Garden of Eden, or I should say, how the interpretations of the allegory are wrong and have led to so much that has been and continues to be wrong in this world . . .”.

The Genesis story of Adam and Eve isn’t the actual story. It just isn’t. Even as an allegory, it’s pretty bad. It’s a shining example of how human memory can morph a story: misremember it, transmogrify it, fossilize it, mythologize it.

The real story makes so much more sense and frankly, is more valuable. Blasphemy, I know. But it’s only blasphemy if one first accepts the misbegotten, misguided logic of the church (which I don’t).

If you’d like to read the full version of Adam and Eve’s story, told so much better than I ever could, you can check it out here: Paper 74, Adam and Eve. It’s found in a book of spiritual philosophy that I study called The Urantia Book.
