The Essay Writing Challenge was as much about the prompt — What drives me as a writer?as it was about following the rules of the challenge. Out of the fourteen entries, thirteen of them followed all of the rules. Only the word length was not followed by one of the participants. While I allowed that participant’s work to be published and showcased with all the other entries, that piece will not be a factor for choosing a winner. You can and should go read it anyway!

VerityAlways’s essay:

Before I announce the winner, I will highlight each entry in the order they all came in. So you may want to grab a snack and a drink and settle in for a long read.

Highlights of the Essays

Sam FinlaysonWriting Became My Safe Place

Books became my solitude from the horror that was my life. Getting lost in another world became a necessary escape from the harsh world I lived in. Writing seemed like the right next step words comforted me.
