Dean Chiang in Forbes: ‘Can Teaching Be Agile?’
College commencement season offers a new opportunity to ask, “How can we keep innovating to be better?” In a recent Forbes article, Mung Chiang, Purdue executive vice president for strategic initiatives and the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering, makes that point and addresses a related question: “Can teaching be agile?”
Citing Purdue’s GRIT+ experiential learning program and Agile Reform of Curricula, he encourages revisiting fundamental assumptions about undergraduate engineering degree programs. Chiang advocates for new approaches, including defining degrees by application domains, turning the four-year experience into a living and evolving design project, enabling students to “learn while working” by pairing an almost full-time co-op with online courses, and providing one-credit courses for added flexibility.
