JMC 303, Race & Media Colloquy, is a weekend course required of majors in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Abilene Christian University. Each semester, this course is facilitated by a new face, an outsider to ACU who brings a different way of looking at a specific corner of the intersection of race and mass media. This semester’s guest instructor/facilitator/coach was Dr. Kathleen McElroy of Oklahoma State University. She was assisted by Dr. Doug Mendenhall of ACU JMC. Between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon, the 28 students enrolled in this course learned to talk responsibly and more deeply about matters related to race, ethnicity and diversity — especially on social media – then tossed their wisdom into the marketplace of ideas in this publicly accessible forum. They did well. Please share their work throughout your own social media realm.
