Ramadan 1445 AH — Day 14: After Committing a Sin

Sin is that which wavers in your soul, and which you dislike people finding out about.” — Muslim

We’ve already established multiple ways Allah can blot out our sins. Since we can’t overemphasize that we will surely commit sins, we must also remind ourselves of alternatives to remedy our situations. Here’s another sunnah act that we could do whenever we fall short.

Al Imam Ibn Taymiyyah once said:

If a believer falls into sin, its punishment could be repelled from him in ten ways:

1) He repents and therefore Allah would accept his repentance. The one who repents from a sin is just like the one who hasn’t sinned.

2) He asks for forgiveness and he would therefore be forgiven.

3) He performs acts of righteousness that would erase his sins, for indeed righteous actions erase sins.

4) His brothers supplicate for him; that his sins be forgiven — while he is alive and after his death.

5) His brothers gift the reward of their actions to him so that Allah may benefit him through them.

6) The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ intercedes for him.

7) That Allah puts him through trials in the life of this world that would expiate his sins.

8) That Allah puts him through trials in the grave, and that would expiate his sins.

9) That Allah puts him through the trials of the Day of Resurrection and its horrors, that which would expiate his sins.

10) Or that the Most Merciful of the merciful has mercy over him.

Whoever lets these ten pass him by, then let him blame no one but himself, as Allah the Elevated said in a Hadeeth that was narrated by His Messenger:

“O My servants, they are only your own deeds, I take them into account for you, and then give their reward or punishment back to you. So whoever finds good then let him praise Allah. And whoever finds other than that then let him blame no one but himself.” — Muslim

Today’s revival focuses on points 1 and 2 as the neglected sunnah that we all need to implement. And there’s a highly recommended practice but rarely followed by many after sinning. Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said:

There isn’t anyone who commits a sin but then gets up, purifies himself, prays two units of prayer and then asks Allah for forgiveness except that Allah will forgive him. — Abu Dawud

Action Points

  1. Whenever you sin, go, and pray two rakat sunnah and ask Allah to forgive you sincerely.
  2. Don’t take this for granted or as an excuse to keep committing sins deliberately and thinking you’re fooling Allah.
  3. If you genuinely fall short, don’t give up on yourself. Apply it over and over again and do not despair of the mercy of Allah

That’s it for today, take action on this Daily Revival and if you missed yesterday’s episode, you can find it here. I ask Allah to make it easy for you and me. Amin!
